Sunday, February 5th marks the 46th NFL Superbowl. This year we have a re-match: the New York Giants vs the New England Patriots. If you remember correctly, these teams met up four years ago for the same game. At the time, New England was going for the perfect season; they hadn't lost all year. Few people remember the regular season game between these two teams... It was the last game of the 2007
regular season and the Giants weren't going to lay down and give New England the win or perfect season. Both teams had already cliched playoff spots, so there was no reason for ALL of their starters to be out there for the entirety of the game. But neither team sat any players and the Patriots won a hard fought game 38-35 to clinch the perfect regular season (16-0). Little did they know, five weeks later they would meet again and the Giants would put an end to the perfect season.
In week-nine of this season, the Giants visited Foxboro for a game against the Patriots. Unfortunatly for New England fans, the Giants once again prevailed. But, as any NFL fan will tell you: what happened last week doesn't matter. I think this will be a great Super Bowl. I keep going back-and-forth with who I think will win. Hopefully, by the end of this article, I will have talked my way into picking one team. But in the mean-time, let's break this Super Bowl down:
What this Super Bowl means if the New Yorks Giants win:
- Eli Manning would pass his QB older brother (Peyton Manning) with two Super Bowl wins. Eli has always been looked at in a negative-ish light. I say "ish" because nobody hates Eli, he just never seemed like he would amount to the calibur QB that Peyton or his dad (Archie) once was. Winning this game would silence those critics.
- Tom Coughlin (head coach of the Giants) will be responsible for the demise of the Patriot dynasty (aka how to handle Tom Brady). I'll explain: Before the Giants defeated the Patriots 4 years ago, Tom Brady was 12-2 in the post-season. Since then, just 3-3 with no other Super Bowl appearances.
- Anytime a team wins the Super Bowl, the price of the pending free-agents for that team goes up. So if the Giants win, they can pretty much say goodbye to TE Jake Ballard and/or WR Mario Manningham.
What this Super Bowl means if the New England Patriots win:
- Tom Brady and Bill Belichick get their revenge from four years ago. Nobody wanted the perfect season more than those two, and if you think for a second that game four years ago isn't going through their minds, you're crazy.
- The Patriot dynasty will be rejuvinated. Unlike other teams in the NFL, the Patriots can re-sign players without paying a stupid amount of money. Why? Because players will take a pay cut to have the chance at a/another Super Bowl.
- Another Super Bowl win for Tom Brady would make him an NFL champion four times. The only other QB's to win four Super Bowls? Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana. If he were to win a fifth sometime in the future, he would go down as the best QB in NFL history.
As for myself? I think the Patriots will win 35-27. Now, I'm not saying that I'm rooting for them, but I think they can pull this one out.
