THE DIRT LIST - 11.11.11

dirtlist

By Sam "Dirty" Stuchlak and Mjarv

If you have been paying attention to the Dirt List or my Twitter account you’ll know that I just moved to Chicago with my girlfriend Mjarv (no, it’s not her real name and it’s pronounced M-JARV). This girl is pretty darn neat, which is obviously why I date her. Here are five tunes that she digs and why she digs them. Enjoy them. Leave your comments below, hit me up on the Tweet machine and check out Mjarv’s Tumblr.

“Fried My Little Brains” by The Kills from Keep on Your Mean Side

The Kills have been my favorite band since I got their first CD while I was in high school. There’s no way I could have even imagined how much their music would mean to me over the four records they have since produced. The Kills have absolutely perfected their minimalist style by using only their raw voices, distorted guitars, and a drum machine (which not many other bands can get away with). The song starts out with a nicely distorted guitar strum, adds some classic grimy vocals, and begins to fill out. Jamie ‘Hotel’s’ voice is the perfect complement to Alison ‘VV’s’ throughout the song. The band has consistently produced nothing short of solid albums though out their ten years together and I expect will continue to never let me down.  Dim lights Embed Embed this video on your site

"Staring at the Sun" by TV on the Radio from Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes

With so many flawless songs spanning across five albums this choice was tough. However Staring at the Sun, I think, really portrays what TV on the Radio can do. The really interesting thing about this song is that the only band members on it are Tunde Adebimpe and David Andrew Sitek. The single, repeating instrumental notes and the vocal range make it remarkable for the full 3 minutes and 26 seconds. There really is nothing this band can’t do. RIP Gerard Smith.  Dim lights Embed Embed this video on your site

"Undertow" by Warpaint from The Fool

Warpaint specialize in a pleasant mix of soothing melodies and catchy hooks. The four ladies of the band start this song out with some catchy guitar strums then blend into the drums and soft vocals. The singing in the song really is infectious and you can’t help but feel sucked into their undertow.  The song starts to pick up about halfway through to a more upbeat tempo and harsher vocals which give the song a strong ending that keeps you wanting more (or just hitting repeat).  Dim lights Embed Embed this video on your site

"Wish List" by Jets to Brazil from Perfecting Loneliness

Jets to Brazil was a band fronted by Blake Schwarzenbach of Jawbreaker and Perfecting Loneliness was their third and final album but also easily my favorite. Wish List starts with some sweet guitar intros then Blake’s gritty vocals kick in with some catchy lyrics that continue through the whole track. This song is also good this time of year as I’ve been sending some special people wish lists of my own for the upcoming holidays. If you’ve never heard Jets to Brazil before I strongly suggest you stop missing out and check out Perfecting Loneliness. You won’t be sorry.  Dim lights Embed Embed this video on your site

"AKA M80 The Wolf" by Portugal. The Man from Waiter: You Vultures!

Even though this band has produced eight albums over only 5 years I can’t help but favor their first. This song is a little psychedelic, a little catchy, and sounds superb in a room that has an echo. The vocal range, rhythms, and hooks make it easy to see why this band can tour and produce so much good music so quickly – pure talent.  Dim lights Embed Embed this video on your site
