When we first started Jared & The Mill in the summer of 2011, we didn't have a clue where our sound was heading. Between our six band members, we had more than our fair share of musical influences. In truth, each of us were - more or less - invested in other musical projects, but it was our surprising ease in working together and our almost effortless friendship that made working together so enjoyable.
Alexz Johnson is an independent Canadian singer/songwriter and actress based in Brooklyn, NY. With a unique, soulful folk-pop sound and passionate songwriting style, she is referred to as a modern-day Stevie Nicks with the vocal style of Aretha Franklin. Her acting success in TV and film as a young adult helped Alexz garner a massive and loyal international fan following.
"I think it's important to separate yourself from the world when you're making a record," says Dry the River frontman Peter Liddle in the opening of the mini-documentary behind the making of their new album. "Being away from everyone and everything," continued Liddle, "that really just multiplied the sense of alienation and being inside the record.
Cold Fronts started playing shows in an abandoned building in West Philly called the Rathaus. The local press dubbed it "Satans Dorm Room". During an impromptu street show at SXSW, Semour Stein, president of Sire Records, happened to be walking by and liked the bands songs. Like a page out of the rock and roll fairytale book, he signed the band and things have not been the same since.
After winning the 2011 Shure Montreux Vocal Competition, judged by the one and only Quincy Jones, Sarah Marie Young decided to use the prize, a week in the Swiss mountains at Balik Farm Studios, to record a full length album of originals. The songs, a narrative of the cold Chicago winters, mixed into relationships with family, friends and lovers, bore “Too Many Februaries”. Drawing from jazz, r&b, folk and funk roots, Sarah Marie Young’s songwriting debut has proven to be promising.
Andy Frasco, the 26-year old Los Angeles, CA native singer/songwriter/band maestro/entrepreneur/party starter/everyday hustler, and his band of gypsies “The U.N.” have been dubbed “Party Blues with a touch of Barefoot Boogie.” Frasco’s shows have been described as infectious, entertaining, and feel good. His performances are recognized as orchestrated chaos, inciting frenzied, undeniable good times, dancing, and perhaps even a good ole fashion freak out.
Born to Nigerian immigrants, independent artist Joy Ike’s music, voice, and writing has drawn comparisons to female musicians such as Corinne Bailey Rae, Regina Spektor, Norah Jones, and Fiona Apple. But her percussive piano-playing and soaring vocals give homage to her African upbringing. Leaving her career as a publicist in 2008, Ike has since played hundreds of shows across the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Midwest.
Anna Soltys and the Familiar is a modern Folk Rock band with an entrancing new sound. Anna spent the first part of her childhood in Poland followed by 6 years in Paris before she moved to her self-proclaimed home, Chicago. It is the cross-cultural awareness that may awaken the type of delivery that is so unique to her sound. On top of the music, her lyrical, poetic content fills the heart with an awareness of the self we could all use a little of.
Angela James’ music brings to mind the rich, deep voices of classic country artists like Patsy Cline and Rosanne Cash with the narrative sensibility of more modern female troubadours like Neko Case and Cat Power in a style all her own. Traditional and hip, artful and sometimes avant-garde, her songs come from a place far more youthful and inquisitive than most people might think; a tribute to her uncanny ability to place innocence and experience in a broad context worthy of artists twice her age. Her songs suggest a sweet melancholy that aches with both pleasure and pain at the wonder of our shared experience.
Knoxville, TN guitar guru ANDY WOOD may be recognized as the multi-talented lead guitarist for Scott Stapp (founding frontman of multi-platinum rockers Creed), but is charging out on his own with a brand new, 24-track (acoustic/electric) double album, entitled Caught Between The Truth and a Lie, out today via HOLMZ Music/Andy Wood Music LLC.
It has come to pass that the three heroes of Disrepsectful Radio have reunited in Chicago for a brief time. Tonight we welcome our hosts back to the studio from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. CDT.
“We’re horny. And we’re sad.”
We could stop right there. Singer/keyboardist Sarah Rayne makes it abundantly clear that the hormonally charged pop music of Babes is simply an extension of the hormonally charged people who make it – herself, along with birth brothers Aaron and Zach and figurative blood brothers Bryan Harris and Jeffrey Baird.
THIS WILL DESTROY YOU began in earnest during the mid-00's in San Marcos, TX. In many ways, the initial sound of the band was the logical destination point for four friends (Christopher Royal King, Jeremy Galindo, Raymond Brown, and Andrew Miller) that had been playing in a variety of bands together throughout their teens.
Bears and Company is a progressive/indie rock band out of Kansas City Missouri. Each member comes from different musical backgrounds and collectively they craft a unique taste for those with open mouths. They are a band that share a story worth listening to, and paint a constant raging tone to illustrate such. This quintuplet is a band that gets in your face and will have you screaming every word in company.
Chicago Rock and Roll sister duo, The Kuhls, have independently released their highly anticipated first ever music video for their hit song, ‘A Woman is Like a Man.’ You can see the music video here.
James, Sandra, Jack and William came to visit the studio in Oct of 2013 before the "pause". All things do come and go, but here are a few photos with the podcast below of Modern Day Escape last year. They had a great time with Jaco and we have the pics to prove it! Enjoy with a friend...
