British pop artist, John Newman is taking the world by storm with soulful voice and old-school aesthetic. With over 80 million views on Youtube, Newman is definitely doing something right. Newman's music is catchy, high energy and heart breaking all at once. His live shows are absolutely no different. After an hour and a half delay due to the weather, the concert started with opening band Lady, The Band.
Lady, Nicole Wray, has one of the sweetest raw voices in today’s music scene, but I do not think that her voice was properly showcased during the set. All the musicians in her band were incredible musicians, but they seem to out shine, overpower and almost drown out her voice. This also may have been due to the lack of a sound check. Regardless, Lady has some amazing pipes on her that will blow you away.
Finally up on the stage was John Newman! Newman’s set was impeccable and flawless; an absolutely pleasure that will have you falling madly in love with his music by the end. Newman’s finesse is a modern electronic twist on Billy Joel, but with the dance moves of Elvis Presley. There is absolutely no way that you are not dancing by the end of his set.
Newman played almost all songs off his debut album “Tribute” and finished his set with hit single “Love Me Again”. The passion he has for music shines through his performance and the emotion just pours out in each song. Newman (and I) were both in tears by the end of “Out of My Head”. My favorite song of the night was “Losing Sleep”. Newman’s music is so easy to relate to and absolutely perfect to help you get through the day. My absolute favorite is to blast his album while getting ready in the mornings and working out.
Newman will be back in Chicago again on April 7 at Metro. Make sure to grab your TICKETS now because THEY WILL sell out!
While we all anxiously wait, check out these photos from the show at Lincoln Hall.
